Resilience@Law Screening |
|
 "Research shows that lawyers, more than members of any other profession or trade, are or will be affected by depression at some stage in the course of their careers." - Pouyan Afshar - President NSW Young Lawyers Resilience@Law is a joint initiative by some of the countries largest firms that features staff, including some partners, from these firms who have come face-to-face with depression. It exposes viewers to real-life stories of people who are struggling to come to grips with the pressures that are put on them at work and in their personal lives. It demonstrates that even people of high intelligence, great drive and seemingly boundless energy can be effected by debilitating depression and survive to tell the story. The lesson for us students and young practitioners is that this is an issue that can affect anyone, including the seemingly invincible superheroes amongst us.

Law Week Mock Trial
Thursday 17 May, 5.30-7pm
Have you ever wondered what goes on in a trial and what roles all the different people play?
Find out at this mock criminal trial presented by the LIV and the Victorian Bar. The trial will demystify the judicial process and give insight into how a criminal trial works. Those attending might be lucky enough to be selected to be part of the Jury who will determine the fate of the defendant. In the grand surrounds of the Banco Court, watch barristers, solicitors and the judiciary play out the drama of this fictional drug possession case. The defendant, Evelyn Cannon, has been charged with possession of cocaine. Will she be found guilty or innocent? The case study of DPP v Evelyn Cannon has been prepared by the Australian Advocacy Institute. The LIV and Victorian Bar thank the Australian Advocacy Institute for its generous support. The YLS involves young lawyers in this mock trial by inviting young lawyers to play the roles of instructing solicitors, prosecution, defence and witnesses who are cross examined and re-examined by counsel. Mooting at La Trobe Student Profile: Josh Attard |
|
 Josh Attard will be travelling to The Hague in April along with five fellow La Trobe students to compete at the International Criminal Court (ICC) trial moot competition. Josh is a 5th year Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of International Relations/Diploma of Languages (Spanish) student. He loves international criminal law and is interested in working in the area in the future. With that said, he would like to do anything where he can travel! In fact, Josh has travelled to 24 countries in the last two and a half years!! He also hopes to become a barrister eventually.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN PREPARING FOR THE ICC MOOT? We made it through to the international rounds in early November. The research component of the competition then ran until late February, where we had to submit three 10,000 word memorials for each of the respective parties to the case. Since then, we have been practicing our advocacy skills by mooting as much as we can in anticipation for the competition in April! I have already gained a significant appreciation for the need to pay attention to detail. I think my research and oral advocacy skills have improved dramatically. I have also learnt so much about International Criminal Law, an area I had little exposure to prior to becoming part of the team.
WHAT WILL YOU GUYS BE ARGUING? The case concerns the criminal liability of a Head of State of a fictitious nation, Libidan. He is accused of failing to take action to stop a cultural practice whereby young girls are taken from their family and subjected to a life of forced labour and sexual slavery. There are three parties to this dispute. There is the Prosecution representing the ICC; the Defence representing the accused; and the Government of Libidan, who want to try him before its national jurisdiction.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT? The ICC is making history, so I would say that travelling to The Hague and being part of this experience is by far the most exciting thing. In addition, I am really looking forward to meeting people from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds and learning about their life, careers and experience so far.
The International Criminal Court handed down its first verdict, 10 years after it was set up to act on crimes against humanity. Follow the link to read about the major cases being handled by the ICC: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-03-14/cases-before-the-icc/3888680

Mooting at La Trobe Student Profile: Emily Boutard |
|

Emily Boutard is an ex-La Trobe Law student currently working as a grad in the tax group at King & Wood Mallesons. Emily was a member of La Trobe’s Vis (Hong Kong) team two years in a row, taking out a Best Speaker award in 2011.
WHAT ACADEMIC SKILLS DID YOU GAIN FROM MOOTING? Mooting will teach you very valuable research and drafting skills. The writing of memorandums will improve your written expression. The oral rounds will improve your speaking ability, teaching you eloquence and enabling you to become a far more articulate speaker.
HOW HAS MOOTING HELPED YOU IN YOUR WORKING LIFE? Participation in the moot will require you to 'step out of your comfort zone'. You will be subjected to many oral practice rounds in which you will be challenged mentally and emotionally. You will learn how to conduct yourself professionally and confidently when on the inside you might not feel confident at all. If you can learn to conduct yourself well in situations of pressure and stress you will have a huge head start on your peers when entering the legal work place. The public speaking skills I developed while I was mooting were indispensable during my clerkship as one of the tasks we were given was to give a presentation on a case or a development in the law. The other two clerks were quite nervous but since I was good at public speaking I was able to deliver it in a relaxed way, and even make a joke that made the partners laugh. You can never say for sure, but it is likely this is one of the reasons they offered me a grad position.
WHAT ARE SOME OTHER BENEFITS OF MOOTING? The friends I made at mooting are all at top tier firms now (those who were interested in commercial law that is) and we can all catch up during our lunch breaks! The uni paid for two trips to Hong Kong, for which I am very grateful because it was a fabulous experience. As an impoverished uni student (as most of us are!), I never would have been able to go on these kinds of international trips without mooting.
AND TO FINISH OFF….. My mooting friends and I used to joke with our favourite saying: "what doesn't kill you....will only HORRIBLY DEMORALISE you". In all seriousness though, it is definitely hard work and when you forget a line or don't know a case it can be embarrassing because you are alone and a defenceless public speaker putting yourself out there. But it is WELL worth the effort. |

The work will be undertaken under a voluntary basis, but hours will be logged and wages paid pending future funding. There will be two major phases of the project: the first is an intensive phase over the next two months where it is hoped that the goal will be achieved; the second is over the course of a year where continual lobbying and work will occur (in the event that the objective is not achieved earlier).
Students are sought for phase 1 and/or phase 2, depending on their availability. The President of the group is Melbourne barrister Bryan Keon-Cohen AM QC (known widely for his work on major constitutional and native title cases). In addition to working with Mr Keon-Cohen, students will be working in a law-firm atmosphere and making contacts with partners of law firms who are also working on the project, as well as many other interesting people.
It is hoped that the city office will be manned by law students five days a week on rotation. Interested students are encouraged to apply by sending an e-mail to COINVic.office@gmail.com with a one page CV and a spreadsheet of available times (AM, PM or full days) over the next semester. A formal cover letter is not required. |

Congratulations to La Trobe Grad! |
|

The LSA would like to congratulate Hugh Crosthwaite on his medal and commend his dedication to community service.
(The original article can be seen on the La Trobe website)
Each year, the Victoria Law Foundation awards one final-year student from a law school in Victoria. This year La Trobe University’s School of Law is proud to announce Mr Hugh Crosthwaite as a recipient of the 2011 Chief Justice’s Victoria Law Foundation Medal for Excellence and Community Service.
The medal is based on demonstrated academic excellence in legal studies and a dedication to community service. Executive Director of the Foundation Joh Kirby said that Mr Crosthwaite’s academic excellence and strong community commitment are highly commendable.
‘Hugh has taken his devotion for upholding human rights and interests in music to make a real difference for disadvantaged members of the local community,’ Mrs Kirby says.
Completing his final year in 2010, Mr Crosthwaite has been involved in multiple community service projects including volunteer work for an after school music program and the St Vincent’s soup van. He is also an advocate in raising awareness of issues relating to refugees and asylum seekers.
The multi-tasking law graduate has been central in the development of The Gist of It, a website designed to educate the community about Australia’s system of government, and the Key of Sea, a music recording project aiming to raise funds for human rights and refugee-related causes.
‘Being awarded the Chief Justice's Medal is a huge honour. I feel absolutely privileged to have been selected from what I am sure was a stellar group of talented and dedicated nominees.’
‘I have been involved in a range of activities within the community for many years, and over this time my concern for maintaining human rights and social justice has become one of my main priorities. My law studies have provided me with opportunities to continue my engagement with the community in a meaningful way,’ he says. |

La Trobe Law graduate wins 2012-13 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship |
|

Former student Steve Koroubas from La Trobe University’s School of Law has won a grant of US$27,000 for one academic year of study in another country.
Professor Gordon Walker from the School of Law was pleased to announce the win on Wednesday afternoon.
Prior to applying for the Ambassadorial Scholarship, Steve visited the local Bundoora rotary club and met the members to seek endorsement of his application. On receiving approval, he drafted up his submission which detailed what he wanted to do next year and how his plans aligned with the club’s mission and principles.
As the application process also asked for two academic referees, Professor Gordon Walker and Dr Jill Murray from the School of Law gave Steve their support. ‘This is a great outcome for Steve and we all congratulate him’ Professor Walker said yesterday, adding that the scholarship is coveted because it is not tied to any one university.
The Rotary Club’s Ambassadorial Scholarships program aims to deepen international relationships worldwide. Whilst studying abroad, winning scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the country by visiting Rotary clubs and giving presentations about their own nation state. On return, scholars then share their experiences with the local Rotarians.
Winning the scholarship means Steve is now a step closer to achieving his goal of studying a Master of Laws at New York University with Professor Benedict Kingsbury who runs a Human Rights centre there. As part of the application process, Steve provided his preferences for where he would like to study with NYU being top on his list. ‘I will be applying there first’ Steve said, ‘and then Cambridge, UCLA, Columbia, Georgetown and Duke’.
Steve studied an undergraduate in Law at La Trobe from 2000 to 2006 and then completed the Master of Laws from 2006 to 2008. During his Masters he worked at the Victorian Government Solicitors Office and then the Department of Treasury and Finance. From April this year he commenced a new role at Telstra as a Legal Council. He is also Chair of the International Law Section of the Law Institute of Victoria and a sessional university lecturer.

La Trobe Mooting Success in Frankfurt |

In the first week of April year, our team competed in the Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot. This moot is a simulated legal proceeding requiring both written and oral advocacy on the topic of international commercial arbitration. The Vis is the most prestigious private international law moot in the world. This year our team competed in a field of 84 law schools including some of the oldest and best known law schools from Europe, US and Asia.
The La Trobe University Law School team reached the Eighth Finals and therefore came equal fifth in the competition. It is the third year in a row that we have made the finals. La Trobe Law reached the semi-finals in 2009 and the quarter finals in 2010.
Congratulations to our team: Emily Boutard, Laura Pollack, Nathan Sargent and Timothy Martin.
Particular congratulations go to our two oralists, Emily Boutard and Laura Pollack who were both awarded with honorable mentions for their superior advocacy. It is the second time that our Team Captain Ms. Boutard has participated in a La Trobe Law Mooting Team that has reached the finals of an international mooting competition.
These results consolidate La Trobe's international reputation as a law school which moots at the highest levels. Our international mooters have developed their written and oral advocacy skills, they have learnt the value of team work and they have networked with lawyers, judges and academics from all around the world. |

This is an excellent chance to learn more about current issues in both the law and otherwise and gain exposure to ideas and movements you might not have known existed.

About Us |
|
Since humble but lively beginnings over 18 years ago, the La Trobe Law Students’ Association (“LSA”) has developed into one of the most active student run organisations at the La Trobe University, Bundoora Campus.
The LSA was formed in 1992 by a small group of students committed to providing students with support services.
Progressive years have seen the committee expand to meet demand for services. The current committee consists of 24 general members and has a 9 member executive. At the beginning of academic year 8 – 10 first year students are co-opted into the committee.
The organisation has a membership of roughly 1400 students. As a student organization, our core purposes are to:
- Encourage discussion between law students, academic staff, the legal profession and the wider community;
- Actively advocate and promote involvement in the legal curriculum offered by La Trobe Law and the University.
- To arrange engaging addresses and seminars for the benefit of law students;
- To organise and promote social events for the benefit of law students;
- To organise competitions for the benefit of law students;
- To organise careers events for the benefit of law students;
- Create and publish informative publications for the benefit of law students;
