2013 La Trobe LSA Client Interview Competition |
|

Client interviewing is one of the most important skills a solicitor must possess. When representing a client it is vital to ensure that you have all the relevant details. The first few consultations with a client will provide the foundation for your lawyer/client professional relationship.
Each team of two has a set amount of time to ascertain all information necessary to allow you to represent your client effectively and then some time will be set aside for you to reflect on your interview. Competitors must cover all the formalities of an interview, take note of the personal details of the client, the intricacies of the problem and suggest possible courses of action. This competition is open to law students of any year level.
The competition will be running on Saturday 18th May, with the Semi-Final held the week of the 22nd May. Registration opens 9am 3rd May and closes midnight on Friday 10th May. Click here to register.
If you have any questions or want to register individually, please contact Stephanie D’Rozario at internalcompetitions@latrobelsa.com |

2013 La Trobe LSA Witness Examination Competition |
|
Witness Examination is a simulated criminal trial. The trial is run from the opening statements, through the examination of witnesses to the closing addresses. Sometimes it involves quick thinking, but the advocacy skills you'll develop will be priceless.
Law students of any year level register individually and are assigned the role of either the Prosecuting or the Defense Counsel. Competitors oppose each other in examining and interrogating two witnesses. The goal is to provide a clear answer to a particular legal problem by exploring the facts. The problem/scenario will be provided to competitors 1 hour prior to the competition, to allow them to prepare the questions they will ask of the witnesses.
The preliminary rounds will be held the week of the 13th May, with the Quarter and Semi Finals being held the following week. Registration opens 9am May 3rd and closes midnight on Friday 10th May. Click here to register.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email Stephanie D’Rozario at internalcompetitions@latrobelsa.com |

The winter classes on offer are:
Introduction to American Law USA Consumer Law USA Legal Writing International Business Transactions
We spoke to Professor Gordon Walker from La Trobe Law who runs the program about the legal writing class.
He said, "The class, USA Legal Writing, teaches you how to write legal memos in the USA style. The Americans are without doubt the best in the world for this skill. I think its invaluable if you are aiming to go into legal practice. I teach law classes in the USA at least twice a year and I'm continually impressed by this aspect of USA legal education. There is no equivalent in Australian law schools. As of 2014, I have decided to make it a compulsory class in our LLM in Global Business Law program." |
